Who cares who won!

2009 was a landmark year with the 10th staging of the cup and it was a fantastic experience for all those that made it to Pinnacle Point.  Some memories include.....

Five men in an Audi

How many fully grown adults with golf clubs and bags for a week can you get in an Audi A4 saloon car?  Five is the answer, and having solved the spacial problem that this presented and having turned the wrong way out of Cape Town airport we found ourselves back where we had started after an hour of human contortion.  It is not surprising that we all got to know each other a little bit better in these cramped conditions, even finding out that Paul was the clear winner of “What is the worst thing you have said to your partner?” competition (You will have to ask Paul).

It was therefore with some relief when we arrived at Pinnacle Point in the evening.

Family and Friends

For the first time in 2009 we were joined by family and friends at the venue, all being housed near each other on the Brookside Close estate.  It was great that this could happen and we all enjoyed the more relaxed atmosphere that this presented.  This did not stop individuals holding back and we were all a bit surprised when Kelly offered to drive us home from the Bar (Cotton balls was Ian’s comment if I recall)?

It was also amusing when Paul and Andy decided to start the BBQ at the villa that they thought was the boys, only to find that it was on a vacant property.

Fynbos

“Thats good, your safe, your fine, still good, no problem.......now your fu%&ed!”.  This was the favourite phrase from Paul M during the trip as your drive drifted off centre towards the Fynbos.  I have to say I fell for it nearly every time thinking he knew some local knowledge that I didn’t, only to be brought back to earth with a bump when the ball was lost.   Losing your ball in the Fynbos though still sounds better than losing it in the rough.  We all stopped looking a too closely though after Paul spotted a snake.

Enough of this chit-chat, what about the golf?

The Match Summary

Round 1 – Fourballs (Thursday AM)

There was a slight change to normal proceedings at Pinnacle point with two rounds on the Thursday and one on the Friday morning.  With a reduced field the sessions were also run as one singles and two fourball matches.  The morning was honours even with the old powerhouse team of Andy and Paul M reunited to crush Dave B and Greg 4&3.  Ian and Magnus scraped past Hugh and Dave by one hole, whilst Pete came back from dormie 2 down to halve his match with Paul C, including (if I say so myself) a fantastic birdie 2 at the long par three 17th.

Round 2 – Fourballs  (Thursday PM)

The afternoon just belonged to the North with two halved games and one win.  Pete and Dave B beat Hugh and Paul M 3&1, Ian halved with Dave (a match that was to repeated on Friday), whilst Greg and Magnus halved with Paul C and Andy.

The score was therefore a very narrow 3.5 to 2.5 lead heading into the evening BBQ.

Round 3 – Singles (Friday AM)

There are wins for Dave B over Hugh by 2 holes, whilst Magnus beat Paul M 2&1.

Ian and Dave must have been sick of the site of each other as they went down the 18th for the third consecutive match.  Ian prevailed....just.   Andy destroyed Pete 6&4 with Paul C also beating  Greg by 2 holes.  So in the end it was 3 to the North and 2 to South in the singles giving the North a narrow overall victory.

Special Mentions

Paul C, Andy, Ian and Magnus all went undefeated.

Andy becomes the competitions highest points scorer with 19 points.

The Captains Cup

In its tenth year we saw players competing for the Captains Cup for the first time.  The cup will be awarded each year to the player making the greatest contribution or best results.  It was decided at Pinnacle Point that this would be based on a stableford competition over the three rounds with points awarded for each players ranking in each round.  The narrow winner was Paul M who beat Dave by half a point.  They were miles ahead of the rest and Paul can be seen celebrating his victory in restrained style.
